SEO earns a position on a page of links; GEO earns a place inside a written answer. The two share most of their inputs: a crawlable site, pages that say plainly what you do and where, structured data, and other sites that mention you. They differ in what counts as success, in how it is measured, and in how much the result varies from one day to the next. A business can rank third on Google for family lawyer in its city and be absent from every AI answer to the same question, because the answer was assembled from directory pages. This page sets out where the two overlap and where they part.

SEO optimizes for a rank and a click on a results page that is nearly identical from one query to the next. GEO optimizes for being retrieved and named inside an answer that is composed fresh each time, varies between runs, and has no position to hold. That single difference runs through everything else: who the competition is, how proof works, and what a monthly report can honestly say. The table sets the two side by side.
| SEO · search engine optimization | GEO · generative engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of success | A position in a ranked list of links, and the click that follows. | Presence in a written answer: named, cited, or corroborated. No position exists. |
| Where the result appears | A results page the buyer scans and chooses from. | A paragraph the buyer reads as a recommendation, usually with three to five sources. |
| How it is measured | Rank tracking and Search Console, stable enough to read day to day. | Repeated runs of fixed prompts in clean sessions, scored across passes, with a noise floor. |
| Who you compete with | Other firms and directories for the same keyword. | Mostly directories, plus whichever firm the engine has corroboration for. |
| Run-to-run variation | Low. The same query returns nearly the same page. | High. The same prompt returns different names on different runs, which is why one screenshot proves little. |
| What you control | Your site, your listings, your links. | The same, plus how quotable each page is in the first hundred words. |
Almost everywhere in the work, and almost nowhere in the measurement. A page an engine can fetch, that opens with a direct answer, carries a date, and states its service and place, is good SEO and good GEO at once. Structured data serves both. Consistent directory profiles serve both. Where they part is in what you check afterwards: a rank tracker will not tell you whether ChatGPT named you, and a prompt panel will not tell you your Google position. A firm that does one well has done most of the work for the other and can see none of the result.
No. Most hiring searches still run through Google, and AI Overviews sit on top of ordinary results rather than replacing them. What has changed is how much of the click survives when an Overview appears. Across one agency's client accounts, organic click-through on informational queries where an AI Overview appeared fell from 1.76% to 0.61% between June 2024 and September 2025 (Seer Interactive, 2025; informational queries only, not hiring intent). Source and scope. The figure is for informational queries, and no equivalent has been published for local hiring searches, so we treat it as a direction rather than a number for our clients' markets.
Whichever gap the measurement shows. If your site cannot be crawled, or its pages open with a paragraph about the company instead of an answer, that is SEO and GEO work at once and it comes first. If that work is done and a customer asking an engine in your city still gets three directories and no firm, that is GEO work: corroboration, quotable answers, and the specific questions directories do not hold. The Baseline Audit measures both conditions before any money goes into either. What it delivers.
There is no mechanism by which it would. The work consists of plainly written pages that answer the questions customers ask, accurate structured data, and consistent third-party listings, all of which are also what Google rewards. The Growth Authority program includes a Search Console review each quarter so that any movement in ordinary search is seen alongside the AI measurements.
Possibly. Ask them how they will measure it: which prompts, how many runs per prompt, in what kind of session, and whether they report mentions and citations separately. If the answer is a screenshot and a dashboard score with no definition, the measurement is not there yet. Our checklist for choosing a vendor applies to them as much as to us.
The inputs overlap heavily and the vendors overlap almost completely, so the suspicion is fair. The difference is in what is measured. SEO has a position and a click; GEO has presence in a composed answer that varies from run to run and has no position. That difference changes how proof works, which is why the method matters more than the label.
